The Castle of Xixona

Perched dramatically above the historic town of Xixona (Jijona) in Alicante province, the Castle of Xixona — often called Castillo de la Torre Grossa — is one of the town’s most emblematic landmarks. It offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into medieval frontier life along with sweeping mountain views. The fortress has Andalusian origins, built by the Almohads in the late 12th or early 13th century to control this strategic hilltop. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the castle was expanded and reinforced, becoming an important defensive stronghold on the border of the Kingdom of Valencia.
